The cult horror film Tumbbad, starring Sohum Shah in the lead role and directed by Rahi Anil Barve, was re-released in the theatres this weekend. Tumbbad has performed better than many new Hindi films, despite being a re-release. After opening with Rs 1.6 crore on the first day, Tumbbad made Rs 2.6 crore on the second day and ended its opening weekend with Rs 3 crore on Sunday. This takes the film’s nett domestic total to Rs 7.2 crore, as per trade website Sacnilk.
At the time of its original release in 2018, Tumbbad’s opening weekend grossed Rs 3.25 crore, and the film managed to only make Rs 13.25 crore during its theatrical run. Currently, the film is only Rs 6 crore away from crossing that mark and with no significant releases this week, this is entirely possible. Stree 2, which was released almost a month ago, is still attracting audiences. But the horror comedy film has already made over Rs 550 crore at the box office, and is now nearing the end of its blockbuster theatrical run.
Tumbbad debuted alongside Kareena Kapoor-starrer The Buckingham Murders, which had a limited release in theatres. In the first three days, the Hansal Mehta film has managed to make Rs 5.25 crore, a slighter figure than that of Tumbbad, which was available on streaming services until a few days ago.
This year has been difficult for Hindi movies. Apart from Stree 2 and Kalki 2898 AD (Hindi), Fighter, Shaitaan and Munjya, not many Bollywood films have managed to earn big at the box office. Tumbbad’s re-release opening weekend figures are better than those of Madgaon Express, which made Rs 7.1 crore, and Kill, which made Rs 6.25 crore.
In the past few months, many Hindi films have been re-released at the box office, and some of them have managed to bring in unexpected numbers. Laila Majnu and Rockstar both made over Rs 10 crore each in their respective re-releases. While Rockstar did well upon its original release as well, Laila Majnu’s success has left observers surprised.
The sequel of Tumbbad, Tumbbad 2 has also been announced.
