‘TV wala Ronit? Balaji wala?’: Vikramaditya Motwane made a face when Anurag Kashyap suggested they cast Ronit Roy in Udaan | Bollywood News

Filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane spoke about casting Ronit Roy in his first film, Udaan, and said that he’d initially finalised a different actor in the role. But when that actor requested that production be delayed for some time, Vikram decided to recast. He said that it took a couple of days to convince Ronit to play the protagonist’s dad in the coming-of-age movie, but admitted that he was initially unsure about hiring him in the first place.

In an interview on The Comment Section YouTube channel, the filmmaker was asked about the casting of Ram Kapoor in the film, but said that it was tied to Ronit being brought on board for the father role, at the recommendation of the film’s co-writer and producer Anurag Kashyap. He said, “Ronit was staying in Anurag’s building at the time, and we’d cast another actor in the role of the father. And Anurag met Ronit one day in the lift, and he asked me, ‘Tu Ronit se mila hai kya (Have you met Ronit)?’ I said, ‘Woh TV wala Ronit? Woh Balaji wala (Ronit from those Balaji TV serials)?’ He said, ‘Mil le, banda bahut interesting hai, maybe we can cast him for the uncle’s role’.”

When Vikram met Ronit, he thought that the actor had ‘baap vibes’ and not ‘uncle vibes’. During pre-production, the actor that had been finalised for the dad role asked for filming to be delayed, but because Vikram feared that he would lose his crew if he pushed production any further, he decided to ask Ronit if he’d want to take over. “I went to Ronit, and I said, ‘Bhaisaab, change karna hai‘. He said, ‘Kya? Baap ka role? Nahi, nahi, main nahi kar sakta baap ka role.’ Then we convinced him that it’s a great role, it took us two days to sit with him, drink with him…” Eventually, Ronit agreed. But that meant the uncle’s role was vacant, and that’s where Ram Kapoor came in.

Starring Rajat Barmecha, Udaan premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, and opened in India to universal acclaim. Ronit Roy’s performance was particularly acclaimed. Vikramaditya Motwane most recently directed the Amazon Prime Video series Jubilee, and will next debut a ‘screen life’ film starring Ananya Panday, and then work on his new series, set in the Tihar Jail.
