Actor-turned-author Twinkle Khanna, the daughter of actors Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna, made her debut in the movie business in the 1990s, but quit after a few years. She is now a writer and host, and she often looks back at her short-lived career in the films with a sense of humour. While Twinkle’s superstar father supported her decision to follow in his footsteps, she witnessed the disintegration of her parents’ marriage first hand.
Dimple married the much-old Rajesh Khanna in the 1970s, when she was just a teenager, and they separated in the ’80s, after his career downfall turned him into a bitter man. Speaking with her friend Karan Johar at the launch of her book, Pyjamas Are Forgiving, in 2018, Twinkle recalled what life was like after her parents’ separation, and said that she greatly admires how her mother conducted herself after it.
She said, “Everything that I write about seems to be about women finding their place in the world, about the chafing between what a woman is, and what she is meant to be. Somewhere, I have this singular image in my head… When we were little and we moved to our grandmother’s house, we all had to share a room. So, my mother and my aunt would share the bed, and me and my sister would have mattresses on the floor. Every morning at 5, my mother would wake up and put on this Jane Fonda tape…”
Twinkle continued, “She would put it on mute, and she would do her workout all around it. And then she would go to work, and at that time, they would do three shifts. She would come home at 9, she would never complain, she always had a smile on her face. For me, it was very clear at that point that a woman doesn’t have to rely on anyone, besides herself. Men were okay, it was enjoyable to have them like a dessert, but they were certainly not the main course.”
Twinkle said that this experience ‘defined’ her whole life, because she had ‘this unique vantage point’, looking up from her mattress at her mother, who ‘set the bar so high’ for her. In another interview, also from around the same time, Dimple had described Twinkle as her ‘mother’ after her separation. “It is her all the way. She’s an amazing child. She must have been all of seven or eight when I got separated. The kind of maturity… She was only wanting to take care of me, to see if I was okay, if everything was alright with me. There are lots of things I can’t say because of you know what… But she was like my friend. Then she turned into a monster mother,” Dimple said at a FICCI FLO event in Jaipur.
