Urmila Matondkar was yet to become a star when she was cast in Rangeela. She had been a child actor for a few years until then, and had also worked in a few films as a grown-up but it was only after Ram Gopal Varma’s Rangeela that Urmila became a household name. In a recent interview, a hair stylist who worked with Urmila during Rangeela, spoke about her experience of working with the actor. Hair stylist Nanda, in a chat with Bollyywood Now, recalled an incident when Urmila left her in tears.
Nanda said that she worked with Urmila for a photoshoot of Rangeela which was being done at Borivali National Park. Nanda said that she used to assist another hair stylist named Maria in those days but was staring to work independently as well. “Urmila asked ‘Where is Maria?’ I said ‘Didi has gone for a shoot. She had to go urgently’. So she asked ‘is this not a shoot? Isn’t this work too?’ So I said ‘I don’t know anything. Didi has sent me’,” she recalled.
Nanda recalled that as she started working on Urmila’s hair, the actor started pointing out her mistakes to a point that the hair stylist eventually started crying. “She would constantly point out mistakes because she wanted to work with Maria. She was okay with me assisting but she didn’t like that I was working on her independently. I would just stand with tears rolling down my eyes but I never cried in front of her. She only wanted to work with Maria. We were never comfortable with her,” she said.
Nanda said that she worked with many actors throughout her career but she found Urmila to be the most difficult of the lot. “I have worked with so many people but this was the only experience of my life where I got scared,” she said.
Urmila has not appeared in movies since 2018’s Blackmail. She was last seen judging a television reality show called DID Super Moms.
