Zubeidaa, which bagged the National Film Award for Best Feature Film, was not only one of Shyam Benegal’s best works, but also a movie that gave the world some good songs. Right from “Dheeme Dheeme” to “Main Albeli”, these tracks once again brought the legends AR Rahman and Javed Akhtar together. In a recent interview, Benegal spoke about the Oscar-winning music composer and called him the best in the industry. He even compared him to another acclaimed Indian composer Vanraj Bhatia.
Despite Benegal having collaborated with Bhatia over various projects since the 1970s, the filmmaker claims Rahman’s music was far more clearer and resonated with the audience.
In an interview with O2india, Shyam Bengal said, “Rahman’s method of using rhythms, melody, harmonies, were very different from the way Vanraj would do it. Vanraj’s sense of rhythm was never as strong as Rahman. And even melodies, what Vanraj did is the melody was there but sometimes it used to get difficult to discern the melody. But when it comes to Rahman, he is very clear because his harmonies are very evident, his rhythm is very dominant and clearly memorable. The styles are very different. One may have a kind of subtlety in their work, the other person would have a grandeur and strength of other kind. But eventually, when you are comparing the two, I would think that for cinema particularly, Rahman was by far the most successful. Not only he was most successful, it used to work better.”
Zubeidaa, starring Kareena Kapoor, Manoj Bajpayee, and Rekha in the lead roles, was the concluding part of Shyam Benegal’s trilogy after Mammo (1994) and Sardari Begum (1996). The film was based on the life of the ill-fated actress Zubeida Begum, who married Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur and was the mother of journalist Khalid Mohammed, who is also the writer of the movie.
