The trailer of John Abraham and Sharvari’s much-anticipated film Vedaa has been released. The film is directed by Nikkhil Advani and also stars Abhishek Banerjee and Tamannaah Bhatia in pivotal roles. The film is based on the subject of caste discrimination and untouchability and follows the story an ex-Army officer and an ordinary girl who join hands to fight against systematic oppression.
The trailer of Vedaa kicks off with John’s character, Major Abhimanyu Kanwar, reciting the Bhagavad Gita’s Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya shlok as he takes down goons. Abhimanyu is revealed to have been court-martialed for disobeying orders. We then meet Sharvari’s character, Vedaa, an ordinary girl from an oppressed caste, who is harassed by an upper-caste man. As her mother prays for a protector, Vedaa expresses her desire to be trained to fight back against the oppressors.
Abhimanyu steps in to train Vedaa, teaching her fighting techniques to make her stronger. Enter Abhishek Banerjee as an influential upper-caste character who humiliates Vedaa and her family, forcing them to hold their slippers on their heads. Following scenes showcase the extent of Banerjee’s character’s brutality. Vedaa is shown being punched as she questions a flawed society that preaches law but is far removed from what the Constitution of India states. The trailer culminates with John and Sharvari joining forces to fight injustice. Drawing from the Mahabharat, John refers to himself as Sharvari’s ‘saarthi’ and tells her she must break the ‘chakravyuh’ of caste discrimination.
At the trailer launch of Vedaa, John Abraham engaged in a heated exchange with a reporter who questioned his choice of similar roles. He said, “I want to directly tell you that this film is different. At least for me, what I’ve done is a very intense performance. Since you haven’t seen the film yet… Maybe watch the film first and then judge. After that I am all yours. Whatever you say. But if you’re wrong, I’m going to turn you around and tear you apart.”
Vedaa marks the fourth collaboration of John Abraham and Nikkhil Advani, after Satyameva Jayate films and Batla House. The movie is scheduled for August 15 release. It will be clashing with Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree 2, Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein, and Chiyaan Vikram’s Thangalaan.
