Shane Patton, the chief commissioner of Victoria police, has delivered an apology to stolen generation survivors and their families in Melbourne. Patton’s apology is part of a series of reforms stemming from the force’s response to Victoria’s truth-telling inquiry, the Yoorrook Justice Commission. ‘This apology is long overdue,’ he says. ‘As chief commissioner, and on behalf of Victoria police, I am here with you today to formally and unreservedly apologise to survivors of the stolen generations and their families for the role of Victoria police that we played in the forcible removal of the Aboriginal children from their families, culture and country’
