Viju Shah recalls composing songs for Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan: ‘The characters were total Bhindi Bazar type’ | Bollywood News

“Mere Pyaar Ka Ras Zara Chakhna, Oye Makhna,” “Bade Miyan Toh Bade Miyan Chote Miyan Subhan Allah,” “Kisi Disco Mein Jayein,” all the songs from the 1998 film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda in the lead roles, made it to people’s playlist when released and till date resonates with the youth with many shaking a leg or two to these tunes made over two decades ago. The man behind the compositions is Viju Shah. In a recent interview, the music composer opened up about the making of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’s songs as well as how David Dhawan used to personally travel all the way to his office to discuss each song at 9 am.

Talking about the making of the songs for the hit 1998 comedy, Viju, in an interview with Radio Nasha Official, said, “In Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, the characters were such. The characters were total Bhindi bazar type. And of course, I knew David Dhawan. For him song means something that should force him to move his body, then he feels convinced. If you see it, tunes were a little different. It was Indian only, but heavy. We used all sort of Indian instruments to compose the songs. Be it ‘Kisi Disco Mein Jayein’, or other songs from the film.”

He added, “We used to have a sitting at 9 in the morning and by 10, it used to be confirmed. Every day at 9, David Dhawan and Sameer ji used to come, discuss song for an hour, have breakfast and leave. In the morning, you stay fresh, so its easy to create things.”

Talking about his favourite song from Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Viju Shah said, “I prefer the title song more. It had more colours. It was the first song we recorded. I also loved ‘Kisi Disco Mein Jayein’. The first line that was written was ‘Chalo Ishq Ladayein’. Everything else was developed later. It was fully commercial. It came out really well.”

Festive offer

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, made on a budget of Rs 12 crore about 26 years ago, went on to become the biggest commercial success of the year with a collection of over Rs 35 crore. The success was despite having a clash with Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
