Though actor Vikrant Massey tied the knot with colleague Sheetal Thakur only in 2022, they had been in a relationship for several years before that. The couple welcomed a baby boy earlier this year, soon after his major career breakthrough with director Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s biographical drama 12th Fail.
Vikrant recently opened up about their bond and recalled the advice his mother gave him when he told her about his relationship with Sheetal. “We (Vikrant and Sheetal) have been together for almost a decade now. We dated for almost eight years (before tying the knot),” he said during a chat with YouTuber AminJaz on his Untriggered podcast.
When the host asked if it was ideal to date for a long time before settling down to ensure compatibility, Vikrant said that it depends on the individual. “This worked for me and suited me. Our temperaments suited each other and our life aspirations were similar. We lived together for almost the entirety of our relationship… for almost seven years,” he added.
Vikrant further recalled that it was his mother who urged them to try a live-in relationship before making things official so that they could see if living with each other was possible and learn about the other person better before commencing a family in the conventional sense. “It was my mother who suggested that we stay together. Thankfully, I have really progressive parents. My mother was born and raised in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1962. She’s done her high school education and was pretty progressive. She would listen to bands like ABBA and Boney M, wear stilettos and read Sidney Sheldon and Jawaharlal Nehru. So, that helped. She recommended that we stay together and it worked for us,” he said, adding that being in a live-in relationship prior to marriage helped him put things into perspective.
“You get to see different shades of each other; that’s true companionship for me,” he said. Recalling that he and Sheetal met through a common friend, Vikrant quipped, “It was love at third sight.” “On the third day that we met, we realised that there were sparks flying and why not address it. There was an instant attraction. That’s always the first thing, attraction. You don’t fall head over heels immediately; no one does. When I say, ‘it was love at third sight,’ during the first two meetings, it was contemplation and assessment, ‘Should I? Should I not?’”
The actor further said that he too was once naive and confused infatuation for true love. “It happens. When I was in Class 7 and had an infatuation, I thought I had fallen in love. Now I know what it was. But that was also beautiful and gave me butterflies in my tummy. I would just look out for her during recess in school and that would make me really happy. If you get eye contact and a smile from the girl, your day is made. But that definitely was not love,” he added.
After the release of his film Blackout on JioCinema earlier this year, Vikrant is now gearing up for his second direct-to-OTT movie of 2024: director Jayprad Desai’s Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba, a sequel to the 2021 film Haseen Dillruba. Besides Vikrant, the film also stars Taapsee Pannu and Sunny Kaushal in key roles. Sheetal Thakur, who made his acting debut in the Punjabi film Bambukat (2016), was last seen in the 2021 movie Dilphire.
