Amrita Singh became a star as soon as she made her debut with Sunny Deol in the 1983 film Betaab but she took a break from acting after marrying Saif Ali Khan in 1991. However, after their divorce in 2004, she made a comeback. In an earlier interview, Amrita said that the only reason that she came back to work was because she had to get financially independent for the sake of her children, Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan. She also said that didn’t want to appear the “loser parent” in front of her kids.

In an interview with Zoom, Amrita discussed the aspects she had to work on before reentering the film industry. She said, “I had to work on how I looked. I was about 15 kg heavier than I am right now. I had to deal with my mental state and then my physical being. I had to overcome everything very fast because I didn’t want my kids to grow up feeling that they were left with the loser parent.”

She added, “I didn’t want my children to grow up seeing me stay at home, mulling over my situation, staying fat and complacent, and unhappy because of my circumstances. I didn’t want my children to grow up learning to be defeated in life by a situation. More than them, I needed to do it for myself and inadvertently it has worked like a role model for my kids because they have seen that life doesn’t get over when traumatising things happen to you.”

During the interaction, Amrita also admitted that during their marriage, Saif wanted her to look good for him. “I am the kind of person who has to feel it herself. Nobody can make me do anything,” she said. She also she that she had gotten “complacent” in those years.

Festive offer

When asked how her kids responded to her absence due to work, she said, “Initially, they felt the freedom of being by themselves in the house without the supervision of their mother. But it slowly dawned on them that this isn’t a one-day phenomenon; it’s a permanent scenario now where Amma isn’t at home for many hours and many days. It’s taxing and trying. Both my kids are small, and they need me around. Ibrahim is just 4 years old, he needs me, and I feel bad for not being able to give him that time. But such is life.”

During the conversation, the question of remarriage was also raised. Amrita responded, “I am not 16 anymore. Quite honestly, I don’t think so, but you never know.”

After her divorce, Amrita made her comeback with Mohit Suri’s Kalyug. She subsequently starred in films like Shootout at Lokhandwala, Dus Kahaniyaan, Aurangzeb, 2 States, A Flying Jatt, Hindi Medium, and Badla. She was last seen on the big screen in Tiger Shroff’s Heropanti 2.
