Dimple Kapadia was only 15 when she got married to Rajesh Khanna, who was almost twice her age at the time. The couple stayed together for almost nine years before separating. Theirs wasn’t a happy marriage, and Dimple herself described it as “traumatic” in an earlier interview. After separating from Rajesh, Dimple made a comeback in the movies, and thought about getting married again. In a 1994 interview, she opened up about it.
In a chat with Pritish Nandy, Dimple was asked about her thoughts on the institution of marriage, and if she thought that the institution would survive in the future. Dimple said that it would be “unfortunate” if the idea of marriage did not survive as it was “important.” Dimple was already separated from Rajesh at the time, but when asked if she believed in marriage, she said, “I do.”
When asked if she would be willing to remarry, Dimple said, “Yes, I would. I don’t know how I’d be able to adjust because I am so used to being my own person, but sure, I would love to get married again.” Dimple and Rajesh never married again. They did not get back together but did not officially divorce, either. He passed away in 2012, at the age of 69.
Talking to FICCI FLO Jaipur Chapter a few years ago, Dimple had shared that she was really naive when she met Rajesh, who was a superstar at the time. She was working on Raj Kapoor’s Bobby which was to be her debut film. Dimple said she actually thought Rajesh would sing songs to her, just like in the movies, but when that didn’t happen, she was heartbroken. “I swear I am not lying, because I was so young. And there was such an impact of the movies. Toh jab mountains pe pohanche aur gaana bhi nahi hua, hawa bhi nahi chali toh meri toh haalat kharab ho gayi (So when we reached on the mountains but there was no song and no gust of wind, I was in a bad state) because my dream was shattered. Because I seriously believed it. I mean how dumb can you get? But well that was me,” she said.
