Despite being the son of a filmmaker, Govinda didn’t live a luxurious life when he was growing up. His father, Arun Kumar Ahuja, worked as an actor in many films and later started making movies but when one of his films flopped, the family had to face hard times. Back in the 1950s, movie producers would invest their own money, mortgage their house and properties to finance their films. Govinda’s father had to move from Bandra to Virar after they lost everything and that is when Govinda was born.

In an earlier interview, the actor said that he had a rather modest upbringing and was applying for regular 9-5 jobs before he made it as an actor. In a chat with Simi Grewal in the late 1990s, Govinda said that he was once rejected by Taj when he applied for a steward job. When Simi asked him about it, Govinda said, “I didn’t get the job because I couldn’t speak in English. I couldn’t speak in front of them. They said he is not confident. How will he even talk? So it didn’t go anywhere.” Govinda, in the same chat, said that he finished his graduation in commerce and would go from one office to another to look for a job but didn’t really find a stable job.

Eventually, Govinda made it big as an actor and in another interview, the actor shared that at one point, he had so much money that he didn’t know what to do with it. Talking to Vinay Pathak on the chat show Har Ghar Kucch Kehta Hai, Govinda’s brother Kirti shared, “One day, he locked the room we were in, and presented all his money, all his bank documents. I was overjoyed. But we had to figure out what to do with the money. And Govinda’s first idea was, ‘Pappu, let’s buy 100 auto rickshaws’. I told him this wasn’t our kind of business… Some time later, Govinda became a star. Once again, we wondered what to do with all his money. And this time, he said, ‘Pappu, let’s buy 100 trucks’. Again, I told him this wasn’t our kind of business.” Govinda, who was sitting next to Kirti, laughed at the memory, and said that his brother always had the same response to his ideas.

Govinda has not appeared in any films since 2019’s Rangeela Raja.
