Television and film personality Malaika Arora’s father reportedly died by suicide on Wednesday, after falling from the sixth floor of his residential building. The police have started an investigation. Malaika’s representatives have claimed that his death was an ‘accident’, and that further details are awaited. In a past interview, Malaika had spoken about her childhood as the daughter of a Malayali Catholic mother and Punjabi Hindu father. She had also spoken about how her parents’ divorce affected her. Malaika also has a sister, Amrita Arora, who is a well-known media personality as well.

In a 2022 interview with Masala! magazine, Malaika had spoken about her humble beginnings, and the values that her parents instilled in her. “Growing up, life was never easy, it was really tough – financially, the entire setup as well. So that was ingrained in my mind that I need to work for myself and work till my dying day. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth or come from a background I could rely on, money that was just flowing. We came from a working-class environment. Hence, it was very important that I stand on my two feet and be financially secure. Even when I got married, I couldn’t give up everything and relied on my husband’s money to take care of my needs.”

Malaika spoke about the secular environment that she grew up in, and said that she embraced Catholicism as she grew older. Her son Arhaan, she said, respects all faiths. “My dad is Punjabi and my mother is Malayali Catholic. My maternal side was such a strong influence in our lives that both my sister and I were baptized. So, we just followed that faith and were Catholic. Thankfully, we live in such a secular family; I was married to a Muslim, my mother is Malayali Catholic, my father is Punjabi and my sister is married to a Muslim, so you know we have all sorts of faiths in our family,” Malaika had said.

Malaika was 11 when her parents separated, and Amrita was six. In an interview with Grazia India, she described her childhood as ‘tumultuous’. Malaika and Amrita lived with their mother after the split, moving from Thane to Chembur. “My parents’ separation allowed me to observe my mother through a new and unique lens. I learned a rock-steady work ethic and the value of getting up each morning to do whatever it takes to become fiercely independent,” she had said.

Festive offer

Malaika was married to actor-filmmaker Arbaaz Khan for over a decade; he was seen outside her father’s residence shortly after news of his death emerged.
