Actor couple Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal, who got married last month, described their wedding as “one big party” where close friends and family members were present to witness their union. But, getting married in front of the family was Sonakshi’s plan, as Zaheer wanted to “elope” and tie the knot.

In an interview with Galatta India, the couple was asked about the idea behind making it an intimate wedding, where their respective families were present. “That was always my plan!” Sonakshi said and looked at Zaheer, who had a different vision for the union, initially.

“I wanted to elope! As in, not elope, but bounce from the country, go somewhere get married, and then come back. But then I got to know that the wedding wouldn’t have been valid in India! You can’t go to Vegas and get married, that’s not allowed,” Zaheer Iqbal revealed.

When the host wondered how do other couples navigate this–since a lot many get married in foreign land–Sonaskhi added, “They must be coming back and doing some formalities here also.” Sonakshi and Zaheer’s registered marriage was held in the presence of close family and friends at her Bandra apartment on June 23, followed by a star-studded celebration at Mumbai’s Bastian.

Sonakshi said due to the hiccup of validity of marriage, Zaheer’s plan was “cancelled there and then.” The Heermandi actor continued, “I always wanted a very intimate wedding. He is ok as long as our most important people were there, which is our friends and family, who were present at the signing. We opened it out to all the people we know, who have been a part of our lives. That’s how we always wanted to be. Zaheero and Sona ki shaadi hai, party toh banti hai. That’s exactly what it was, one big party.”

Zaheer made his film debut with the Salman Khan-backed drama Notebook. Zaheer and Sonakshi met each other at a party hosted by Salman, who had also launched the career of Sonakshi with his blockbuster Dabangg. The couple worked in the 2022 comedy drama Double XL, co-starring Sonakshi’s friend Huma Qureshi.
